How do blind people read braille?
The system developed by Louis Braille, who was an alumnus of the Royal Institute for the Blind in Paris made it immensely easier for the disabled to read signs, as it reduced the number of dots from twelve to six. The earlier system did not take into account the rules of spelling, punctuation, or numbers. Consequently, it was not very useful. The letters were relatively large, and this translated into low efficiency of the whole process and inconvenience. What does it look like today and how are Braille slates read?
What is braille learning based on?
Reading by the blind involves the use of relief printing, known as tiflography. The six-point type created by Louis Braille consists of two columns, each with three points. Importantly, the distance of each point from each other must not be less than 2.5 mm. As a result, reading is comfortable. The characters to be read separately should not be next to each other, as blind people may read this as a special texture of the material rather than a specific message. In order for people with disabilities to be able to use Braille slates without problems, it is important to develop tactile perception on a regular, daily basis tactile perception. Blind children should start learning by developing orientation in the context of their own bodies and in smaller and larger spaces. As for the order in which individual letters are introduced, the first to appear should be those signs and connections that are easiest for tactile perception.
- In practice, to begin with, Braille slates should contain signs based on the points on the left and top of the part and those that consist of one point, two or three. These are therefore the letters a, l, b, k and c.
- Only later are more letters introduced. It is necessary to stick to the principle of graded difficulty. At the initial stage of learning it is very common to start with an enlarged six-point. On the other hand, when the child is to learn another letter, the augmented version should not be used.
- When teaching, it makes a big difference what materials the teacher uses. The tools should be tailored to the level child, his needs and abilities. As already mentioned, progress is greatly affected by spatial orientation and the level of tactile perception. Many people start with Braille typing. However, if spatial issues are not a problem problem, braille slates can be used.
What else is worth knowing about Braille reading?
Mastering this type of writing has many benefits. First of all, blind people have a better chance of finding employment, as they are better able to communicate with co-workers. Another important point is greater independence, which translates into independence and efficiency not only in the professional, but also in the private sphere. This, in turn, influences improved well-being and increased life satisfaction. The ability to read convex signs and write in braille indicates a better education, which also allows you to get a a better position. Nowadays, thanks to the fact that more and more is known about the dot alphabet, new reading techniques are emerging. Both mathematical, musical, physical and chemical notations are written in this type of script. In addition, blind people can successfully successfully read fiction, specialized literature, magazines, dictionaries and many other textbooks.
