Fortunately, Braille signs can now be seen in many places: schools, hospitals, and offices. This is a new standard resulting from the obligation to comply with the Accessibility Act. A new standard for us in Poland. While watching an American TV series from a dozen or so years ago about a very good diagnostician, I noticed that in the hospital where the story takes place, every door had a Braille sign.

"We don't have any blind people here" - this is a sentence we often hear when talking to a potential client who, trying to fulfill a statutory obligation, orders Braille signs - without conviction.

An argument for this attitude may be the sentence - "there are no blind people in your country because you are not prepared to allow such a person to move around safely in your country."

First, let's create an environment that allows people with various abilities, including those with limited skills, to function within it. Then these people will have the courage to leave their homes and engage in social life.

Braille tablets - what are they and how are they made?

Braille signs are a type of tactile graphics based on raised printing. Tactile graphics are used to describe various elements or specific objects, while simultaneously ensuring the message is as simple as possible. Depending on the material being addressed, different methods are used.

A technique that's gaining increasing popularity in tactile graphics production is relief printing. A major advantage of relief printing is the use of other materials, which also enhance the aesthetic appeal. Printed boards can be made on wood, sheet metal, or plexiglass. The number of materials that can be used as a substrate is essentially unlimited.

The greatest advantage, however, is the ability to cover the convexities read by blind people with graphics, along with information for sighted people. This way, we combine information for both the blind and the sighted on a single board. Braille text can be covered with graphics, or tactile graphics can be created of objects, highlighting their outline and covering them with a photo.

When creating this type of board, the biggest challenge is its design, because the information it contains must be conveyed in two ways, so it should be as clear and easy to read as possible for both groups of recipients.

Alternatively, plaques are made from PET plastic. In this case, a tool such as a thermoformer is used to achieve the raised areas. Strong plastics and metals are also very popular, and engraving is used for their processing. Another method involves pressing small beads into holes in the surface. A milling machine is also a popular tool.

Each of these techniques has its advantages and disadvantages, the most important being durability, aesthetics and ease of reading.

Where can you find examples of typhlography?

Signs can be found both in public places and inside buildings. What is their most popular use?

  • Public institutions and office buildings – Braille signs serve primarily an informational function. For this reason, they are increasingly appearing in various offices and office buildings, providing information about the location of a specific office and how to navigate the building. Very often, the information also includes a room number, phone number, and department name.
  • Museums and other cultural facilities – in this case, signs can provide information about specific exhibits, their history, and uses. The presence of tactile graphics in such places allows blind people to expand their knowledge and develop their cultural skills.
  • Streets and transportation centers – smaller signs often appear in the centers of large cities, leading, for example, to tram, bus, or metro departure points. In this case, the signs provide information on how to navigate a given location.

What else is worth knowing about signs?

In most cases, tactile graphics are the only source of information for blind people who want to navigate public spaces independently. Therefore, their role is crucial. Simplifying the message allows for quick reading and full understanding. Growing awareness of the needs of the blind means the number of such elements is constantly growing. The development of tactile graphics itself is also crucial, which bodes well for the future.
